In 2021/2022 Lewis High school participated in FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics FTC (First Tech Challenge) competition for the first time as a result of a partnership between i.am/Angel foundation and LAUSD. During their rookie year, Lewis high school’s Bionic Lizards (FTC Team 20500) competed in an LAUSD modified season due to COVID restrictions and finished 15th in the regional competition; gaining significant experience during their first attempt at robotics. During their second season (2022/2023), the Bionic Lizards improved significantly finishing first at the LAUSD regional event and first at the LAUSD championship event, earning an invitation to the FTC World Championship competition held in Houston, Texas.
The team is currently comprised of 5 student members, one head coach (Dr. Holcomb) and one assistant coach (Mr. Austria). While participating in robotics students learn; engineering design, electrical design, 3D design and printing, programming, team building, leadership skills, communication skills and more.
